Abstract

480,017. Wireless receiving circuits. KINROSS, R. I. Aug. 15, 1936, No. 22524. [Class 40 (v)] The frequency changer valve 1 of a superheterodyne receiver also functions as a thermionic reactance or frequency control valve for automatic tuning by utilizing the mutual conductance existing between the oscillator anode and the control grid, part of the voltage across the tuned circuit 4, 5, of the local oscillator being fed to the signal grid over resistance 11, while the bias of that grid is varied in accordance with sense and magnitude of departure from exact tune by the usual error-detector network 22 ... 30. By this means a voltage 90‹ phase-displaced from the oscillator anode voltage is applied to the control grid, and the valve 1 presents across the circuit 4, 5 an inductive reactance variable with the bias on the control grid since the input circuit 6, 7 has a capacitative reactance at the oscillator frequency when the latter is higher than the signal frequency. The values of condenser 8 and resistance 11 are so chosen that about 1/ 20th of the oscillator voltage is transferred to the signal grid. To increase the range of automatic control with this arrangement the oscillator coil 4 may be wound in two opposing sections connected at their junction to the oscillator anode.
