Abstract
A method of lining and coating a pipe with asphaltic material, consists in closing the pipe, heated to a suitable temperature, introducing a predetermined amount of thinly liquid asphalt thereinto, slowly rotating the pipe with its axis substantially horizontal, and helically winding a strip of thickly liquid asphalt around it. According to an example, the pipe is heated to 150--160 DEG C. and closed by ring dams. Coal-tar pitch or a similar asphaltic material, heated to the same temperature, is poured into the pipe, which is then set up with its axis disposed horizontally and is rotated at a circumferential speed of 0.5--1 meter per second. Simultaneously, rather viscous blown asphalt bitumen, heated to 150 DEG C., is run on to the exterior of the pipe, from an axially - moving receptacle. Air or water cooling may be applied. A protecting strip of paper or other fibrous material may then be helically wound around the pipe, and secured thereto by a very thin layer of asphalt. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the lining and coating materials have substantially equal hardnesses at 25 DEG C., but at 150 DEG C. the viscosity of the coating material is about thrice that of the lining material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
