Abstract

479,328. Sound directing appliances. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS. Inc. June 15, 1937, No. 16550. Convention date, June 18, 1936. [Class 13] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a sound-translating device comprising a Transmitter and a diaphragm and means forming a plurality of paths for sound waves passing to the diaphragm, the paths are in the same direction, are of different lengths, and terminate in a common plane adjacent the diaphragm so that the device is responsive substantially only to waves travelling in the direction of the said paths. As shown the paths are formed by spirally arranged tubes 14 mounted in a ring 16 threaded into a coupler member 13 having one end adjacent the diaphragm 26 of the transmitter 11. The coupler is divided by a member 20 into compartments filled with damping material 21, such as hair felt, and an acoustic resistance screen 22 is disposed across the coplanar ends of the tubes 14. The lengths of the tubes increase in an arithmetic progression, the shortest tube having a length of about one inch and the longest tube being about five feet in length and approximately equal to the wave length of the lowest frequency for which the device is to be directional.
