Abstract

479,229. Drilling wells. BOWIE, C. P. Dec. 3, 1936, No. 33209. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1935. [Class 85] A mud for circulating in wells during drilling includes clay and one or more substances wholly or partially soluble in hydrocarbons and substantially insoluble in water. Gums such as resin or chicle, natural or artificial asphalt, and stearates of Zn, Ca, Pb, &c. may be employed. The liquid constituent may be water, glycerine or a mixture of glycerine and water or oil. After drilling, the well may be baled out to allow any oil or gas to pass through the deposited mud lining.
