Abstract
479,196. Utilizing movements of vehicles. MORRIS, N. H. July 29, 1936, No. 20978. [Class 103 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A dynamo or other auxiliary apparatus on a railway vehicle is driven by means of V- grooved pulleys mounted respectively on a bogie-axle or vehicle-wheel and the shaft of the apparatus pivotally suspended from the bogie headstock, and connected by multiple endless V-belts or ropes provided with spring tensioning means acting between the bogie and the auxiliary apparatus. As shown, a heating alternator 25 on a railway coach is pivotally suspended by lugs 26 from a pin 27 mounted between cross-pieces 28 extending between spaced members 29 constituting the bogie headstock 30 and is driven bv endless V-belts 1 which directly connect a pulley 2 on the bogie-axle 3 with a pulley 4 on the alternator-shaft 5. The pulley 4, for example of mild steel, consists of a hub-part 6, Fig. 5, keyed to the shaft 5 and connected by a web 11 to a rim-part 9 having belt-grooves 10, each groove being formed with conical sides, a rounded crest 12 and rounded bottom. The cast-iron pulley 2, Fig. 4, is formed in halves each consisting of a web-part 14 integral with a grooved rim-part 15 and recessed to engage a flange 19 on a bush 20 which extends outwardly from the pulley over the shaft 3 and has a further shaped flange riveted to the adjacent vehicle-wheel 23, the axle being able to deflect freely in the pulley. The bottoms of the grooves 16 on the rim 15 are flat and to facilitate feeding of each belt into and out of the grooves the radii at the crests intersect in a line 17. In order to tension the belts, the alternator is urged away from the axle 3 by a compression spring 31 acting bstween a bracket 32 on the alternator and an adjustable abutment 33 on a screwed rod 34 which is fixed at one end to a bracket 35 on the bogie 30 and passes freely at its other end through the bracket 32. Safety loops 37 secured to the headstock 29 encircle the alternator with sufficient clearance to allow the alternator to swing freely within the necessary limits. A two-piece galvanized, sheet-metal casing 40 mounted by means of brackets 42 and parts 43 fixed to the bogie frame protects the belts against damage, theft &c., the axle 3 and shaft 5 passing respectively, with clearance, through holes 44 and an elongated slot 45 in the casing which is provided with a hinged inspection flap. Hooks (not shown) may be secured inside the casing upon which the belts, loosely looped around the axle 3, may be suspended when heating current is not required. A number of spare belts may be suspended similarly. Specification 383,355 is referred to.
