Abstract
Products stated to have wetting and dispersing properties are obtained by sulphating the unsaturated polymerization products which are prepared by subjecting unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons or mixtures containing the same to a polymerization treatment. The latter may be effected by the processes described in Specifications 202,311, 291,137, [both in Class 2 (iii)], 360,331 and 443,679. The sulphated products may be converted into soaps, which since they are soluble in organic solvents are suitable for the manufacture of dry cleaning soaps, spray oil and coal-oil dispersions, and may also be converted into ethers, esters or alcohols. The olefinic starting materials may be prepared by cracking or dehydrogenating mineral or tar oils or paraffin wax, by dry distillation of coal or by chlorinating saturated hydrocarbons and splitting off hydrochloric acid. For the polymerization, floridine, alumina, boron fluoride or aluminium or zinc chloride may be used as catalysts. In examples: (1) a mixture of olefines obtained by cracking a benzine fraction and by vapour phase cracking of spray wax is polymerized in the presence of benzene using aluminium chloride as catalyst, the product is decomposed with hydrochloric acid, washed with water and distilled; the resulting oil is sulphated with sulphuric acid of 90 per cent strength in benzine; (2) the sulphuric ester of example 1 is hydrolized by heating with water and steaming to obtain an alcohol; (3) the product of example 1 is neutralized with caustic soda, mixed with ether and heated to 100 DEG C. at 20 mms. pressure. A sample furnished under Sect. 2 (5) is prepared from cracking gases containing propene and butene by polymerization, using a phosphoric acid-kieselguhr catalyst, and sulphation with sulphuric acid followed by neuttralization. Specification 329,622, (as open to inspection under Sect. 91), [Class 2 (iii)], also is referred to.ALSO:Products stated to have dispersing properties are obtained by sulphating the unsaturated polymerization products which are prepared by subjecting unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons to a polymerization treatment.
