Abstract

479,129. Surgical heating and cooling appliances; flexible hot-water bottles. SARASON, D. Aug. 1, 1936, No. 21363. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] A water bottle for application of heat or cold to the body has an elastic wall or walls adapted to be distended by the water, non-extensible parts arranged to define its shape, fastening means for. securing the bottle in position on the body, and a valve-controlled filling connection through which the bottle can be filled with water under pressure after it has been fastened in position. In Fig. 2, indiarubber walls 2, 3 of a rectangular bottle are united at their edges to non-elastic flexible fabric flaps 4 which are continued over the margins of the bottle to form reinforcements 6. The bottom wall may be reinforced all over so as to be non-extensible. The flaps 4 are fitted with buttons 5 for strings or bands by which the bottle is secured to the body. A. filling tube 7 is provided with a valve (not shown) connected to a rubber press bulb by means of which hot or cold water may be forced into the bottle under pressure. A device, Fig. 3, for application to the tonsils comprises two bottles 10 connected by a non-distensible tube 11 to which is attached the filling tube 14 fitted with valve 15. The bottles have flexible upper and lower walls united at their edges to form a thick inextensible flap 12 to which securing straps 13 are attached. The construction shown in Fig. 3 may be modified to suit other bilateral organs, e.g. the kidneys. In some cases, especially where there are two or more bottles, the expansion of the bottles may be limited by means of non-extensible bands or bags embracing the walls. For treating the fingers, hands, feet, &c., the bottle is formed with a bottom or inner wall of tubular or dome shape, and an expansible top or outer wall of similar construction, the walls being united at their edges and having annular reinforcements. For the treatment of joints, the bottle is similarly made in the shape of a ring. Suitable fastening means are provided.
