Abstract

479,059. Lids, ends, or heads for containers. CARPENTER, H. L. July 31, 1936, No. 21206. [Classes 18,21, 66, and 125 (iii)] An end closure for a container for liquids, &c. comprises a plurality of fibre - board sheets secured together by adhesive and formed with a dished portion 15, Fig. 2, to fit inside the container and a peripheral #-shaped member 3 in which the outer wall contains a less number of sheets than the inner wall. The end closures are removable or permanently connected to the body, the connecting means being adhesive or strips 20 of stretchable material, e.g. bias tape, which may extend over to the surface 29. The body of the container is of moulded fibre-board or formed, like the lid, of a plurality of sheets and layers 14 of waterproof material are incorporated in the inner layers of the body and closures. To reinforce the joint between the ends and the body the portion 44 may be bent over, grooved, or indented, or fastened by staples, stitching, spiked metal clips, or metal clamping rings. The closures can be strengthened by means of radial corrugations and the devices at both ends can be strengthened by coating with cellulose or thin metal. A bung hole with a screw-threaded bung 23, Fig. 4, may be provided, the bung hole being lined by a metal, fibre, rubber, &c. sleeve 22 held in place by friction or adhesive. In this modification, the waterproof layer 24 is at the bottom of the closure and the container is lined with asphalt, &c. 25. The container may be square in cross section and the body collapsable.
