Abstract
478,734. Automatic tone control. PERCIVAL, W. S. May 20. 1936, No. 14290. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In a transmission system (broadcast or television receiver or transmitter or gramophone recording or reproducing circuit) mush, needle scratch and the like are minimized by providing separate paths for the high and low frequencies and attenuating the higher frequencies except when they are present at a sufficient volume to mask interference. In one arrangement, Fig. 1. (not shown), the high-frequency path includes in series a pair of oppositely directed diodes in parallel so that it only passes signals of above a pre-determined amplitude. A filter connected to the output circuit suppresses harmonics introduced by this arrangement. In a modification, the high-frequency path is shunted by diodes 31, 32 which arc rendered non-conducting by the rectifiers 29, 30 when high frequencies are present at a sufficient level. Delay networks 25, 33 are connected as shown. The gain of amplifier 28 or the bias potentials normally applied to the attenuating diodes may be adjustable. The diodes may be conllected in a balanced bridge to avoid the effect. of their capacity. U.S.A. Specification 2,009,229 is referred to.
