[Class 46] A machine for separating water from sand or like material comprises a bucket-wheel rotatably mounted over and within an opentopped settling tank so that the buckets scoop up the sand and deliver it to a shoot discharging to the side, the bucket arms being offset from the plane of rotation of the buckets to facilitate correct location of the shoot. As shown, a settling tank a of substantially semi-cylindrical form is provided with a vertical wall a<1> and an inclined wall a<2>, the walls supporting bearings d for the shaft e of a bucket-wheel g. The arms g<1> of the buckets are offset to facilitate the correct position of a shoot h beneath the upper buckets g<2>. In a modification, the settling tank is flat-bottomed, the bearings d are supported by an internal frame, and the bucket-wheel is of radially-grooved disc formation to permit insertion of extra arms if necessary. In a further construction the bucket-wheel is provided with buckets on both sides for discharge on to two shoots oppositely inclined. For treatment of relatively dirty material, for example, sand or gravel held in suspension in water issuing from a sand or gravel washing machine, any of the separating machines described above may be arranged to discharge into a washing trough of spiral-bladed conveyer type, which discharges into another separating machine, clear water passing through the washing trough from the second to the firstmentioned separating machine.
