Abstract

<PICT:0478564/III/1> Cans are provided with a lining 20, Fig. 2, of chlorinated rubber which is applied to the surface of the sheet metal 10, Fig. 1, from which they are made by a doctor blade 14 from a plastic mass 11 of the material, the metal being supported, for instance by a continuously moving belt 15, and dried by being passed over a heated plate 18 which may form part of an oven or other heating means 17. Pressure may also be employed to assist the setting of the film. Chlorinated rubber lining strips are preferably present on both the edges which are folded together to form the seamed joints of the can, and are continuous with the lining 20. They may, however, be provided on one of the edges only and may be applied independently to the edges. The linings 23 in the seams are made tacky by warming the parts before or after the seaming operation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the lining of paper and like containers with rubber or chlorinated rubber (preferably rendered tasteless and transparent) and also the use of these substances for lining the seamed joints only of such containers, or of metal cans. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 441,622 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).
