Abstract

478,150. Steering road vehicles. HAWTHORN, H. R. Nov. 2, 1936, No. 29744. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v)] Steering control means comprises a steering shaft 1, an upper shaft section 6 connected to the steering shaft and the steering wheel 4 through spaced joints or pivots 3, 5, means for locking the . j joints to prevent relative angular movement of the parts connected by them, and hand-operated means for releasing the said locking means of the two joints simultaneously. Thus the steering wheel can be readily moved out of the way of the driver when desired and can be locked in its new position to prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle. In the construction shown the shaft section 6 is connected to the shaft 1 and the wheel 4 by rule joints 3, 5 formed with stops 7 to limit angular movement. The joints are locked in the normal position, shown in full lines, by means of spring bolts 10 sliding in the shaft section 6 and having lugs 9 projecting into notches in the joint parts on the shaft 1 and the wheel, so that the wheel is locked to the part 6, and the part 6 is locked to the shaft 1. The inner ends of the bolts are formed with overlapping slots 13 through which passes a rotary cam 14 which has cylindrical heads 15 rotatable in the part 6 and carries an arm 17 controlled by a jointed rod 19 20 furnished with an operating knob 22. When it is desired to move the steering wheel out of the way the knob is depressed and rotates the cam 14 to withdraw the bolts 10 from the notches and thus free the joints. The shaft section 6 can now be swung upwards parallel to the dash-board 2, as shown in broken lines, and the wheel 4 can be swung about the part 6 also parallel to the dashboard. The steering wheel is marked to show the position in which the joint pivots are horizontal to allow the desired movements. The joint 21 in the rod 19, 20 is coaxial with the upper joint 5 when the knob 22 is depressed. In order to prevent unauthorized use a hasp may be mounted on the dashboard adapted to embrace the shaft and to engage and lock in a key-controlled lock on the dash-board. According to the Provisional Specification the cam may be controlled by a cable.
