Abstract
Hydraulic gypsum cement is made by calcining, at a temperature of at least 1800 DEG F., and preferably at 1800-2300 DEG F., an intimate mixture of a phosphoric acid, an alkali phosphate, and natural or artificial gypsum in a hydrated, partially hydrated or dehydrated state. Preferably silica or a silicate is also included. Examples of suitable alkaline phosphates are mono-calcium ortho phosphate and a sodium phosphate, e.g. mono-sodium ortho phosphate or sodium metaphosphate. The amount of the ingredients added to the gypsum need not exceed 1 per cent of phosphoric acid, ,5 per cent of alkaline phosphate and 3 per cent of silica. In an example, a natural gypsum containing 99,3 per cent of CaSO4. 2H2O is mixed with 1 per cent of silica, ,6 per cent of orthophosphoric acid, and ,2 per cent of mono-sodium ortho-phosphate, formed into pellets and calcined in a continuous tunnel kiln at 2100-2200 DEG F. The usual accelerators or catalysts, e.g. potassium sulphate and zinc sulphate are added before grinding.
