Abstract

477,065. Rolling. STEVENS, A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry, Co.) Nov. 13, 1936, No. 31048. [Class 83 (iv)] A blank, ingot, or a slab cut from an ingot is first rolled broadside to increase its width to approximately that of a required sheet (more than 65") after which it is turned round through 90‹ and rolled lengthwise to the desired thickness, e.g. for coiling at 17 while confining the edges (by rolls) to the desired width. The taper may be first taken out of the ingot by a preliminary longitudinal rolling. The sheet or coil may be finished in a hot or cold tandem mill. The apparatus comprises ingot heating furnaces 14 with pushers 15 delivering an ingot to a roller table 11 which carries it broadside past two rackoperated pushers 30 delivering it broadside to the rolls 21. The ingot is passed back and forth broadside through this reversing mill (the edging rolls 40 being screwed out of active position) until it is extended to the required width. It is then turned through 90‹ by one of the turntables 80 and repeatedly passed through the same mill 21, the edging rolls 40 at both ends of the mill being screwed in to confine the blank to the required width, and the rolls 21 being screwed down after each pass to give the required thickness. Thereafter it may pass to a coiler 17 or direct to a hot or cold tandem sheet finishing mill. The blank is also supported by rollers 70 spaced between the edging rolls 40, the rollers 70 being capable of sliding in as the rolls 40 are moved in by the separately power-driven worm screws 55. The edging rolls 40 are mounted on stub shafts 43 and drive through gearing 45, 51 all of which slide with the rolls during adjusting.
