[Class 40 (iv)] (Also in Group XL] A thermionic amplifier of the kind having constant gain over a very wide frequency range comprises two screens, of which the inner surrounds the signal path through the amplifier and the outer surrounds the inner, the inner screen being connected by a low-impedance path to one point on the signal path. The invention relates particularly to amplifiers connected with a cable such as shown, in which the inner conductor 1 has an outer concentric return conductor 2 surrounded by a concentric sheath 3. The inner screen 4 of the amplifier is connected to the outer conductors 2 at 5 and to the cathode of the amplifier 7, and may include screening partitions 6 between amplifier stages. The screen 4 is connected also by conductors L1, L2 to the outer screen 10 which is connected at 11 to the sheath 3. Except for these earthing connections L1, L2 (which prevent feedback in the amplifier as explained in Fig. 3 (not shown)), the screens 4 and 10 are carefully insulated. The supply batteries 15 are housed either between the screens 4 and 10 or outside 10 as shown, high-frequency interference being prevented by filters 12, 16, 13, 14. The inner screen 4 may have a copper rail extending through it and connected to the outer conductors 2. The invention may also be applied to transmission systems having symmetrical two-wire lines ; the connection between the inner screen 4 and conductors 2 may then be dispensed with, and only a single connection between inner and outer shields is then required, Fig. 2 (not shown). If the cable comprises several coaxial two-conductor lines, each with its own amplifier, a common outer shield is provided and connected to the cable sheath.
