Abstract

476,885. Soldering and brazing pipes; drilling and tapping pipes under pressure. MINNS, R. J. June 16, 1936, No. 16760. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Relates to a tool of the kind which embodies two relatively and axially movable members the outer one having pipe-closing expansible elements, for use in inserting any kind of fitting, union, junction, &c. into pipe lines and mains whether under liquid or gaseous pressure or not, and comprises an outer tube having a nut directly carrying spring members for holding or fitting &c. and an inner member carrying the expanding device with screw - operated means for exerting pressure between the tube and inner member for expanding said device. Iron, brass, copper, &c. pipes may be jointed, shortened, or screwed. The tool comprises a tube a of a diameter to pass freely through the bore of the fitting or its union to be installed. A rod b with a tapered nose bland expanding rubber members b<2>, is mounted within. A knurled compression nut b4 is arranged at the other end of tube a which is threaded at a<2> and has a turn-nut a<3> in one therewith. A conical or like lock-nut c with spiked, spring fingers for holding the union &c., is mounted on the thread a<2>. The rod b may also carry a spanner b<6>. An auxiliary pin d with a nozzle d<1> for tubing to permit the escape of liquid or gas from the trench, may also be used. The pin is tapered at d<3> to expand lead, brass, copper, or composition pipes by blows on the end d<20>. In inserting a union fitting in a pipe, after the pipe has been cut off, the end is first expanded by the pin d. The fitting union is then slid over the part a of the tool and the nut b<4> operated to swell the members b<2> to close the pipe. The union nut is held by the fingers c<1> until the wiped or other desired joint between the parts is made. Upon cooling, the tool is removed, and the stop-valve &c. to be secured is connected to the union. In a modification, a lock-nut and a pressure-handle on rod b are secured by set-screws. In a further modification, the inner rod may be replaced by a tube with a removable screwed plug in its forward end. The rear end is screwed to receive valve elements &c. to supply fluid or to receive a gauge.
