Abstract

476,585. Fluid - pressure brakes. KERSHAW, A. G., SIMMONS, A. W., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. June 11, 1936, No. 16343. [Class 103 (i)] In braking-apparatus for railway and like trains comprising a retardation controller on each vehicle, the braking on each vehicle is rendered substantially the same without the necessity of initial adjustment of the controllers to suit the characteristics (e.g. stroke of brake-actuating piston) of the braking apparatus on each vehicle. To achieve this result, the action of each controller is modified by the instantaneous air-pressure in the brakecylinder. As shown, the air from a supplementary reservoir or from the train pipe enters the controller at 8, passes a valve 7, and is supplied by a pipe 9 to the brake-cylinder. The space 2 is thus filled with air at brakecylinder pressure, which presses a piston 12 to the left against a spring 13. The self-lapping valve 11 follows the piston and tends to close the valve 7 through the rocking link 5. The brake-cylinder pressure in the early stages of the process will be different for different vehicles and thus (assuming the controller to be made from standard parts) the valves 7 will be at different distances from their seats. At a certain retardation of the train as a whole the pendulum 1 in each controller swings away from its stop against the action of the spring 3 and moves the point 4 on the lever 5. The valve 11 remains in the lapping position and the valve 7 is therefore brought down on its seat. Any further increase in retardation causes the valve 11 to open and relieve the pressure in the brake-cylinder. This relieving action occurs at different values of the retardation in different vehicles according to the initial setting of the valve 7 determined by the brake-cylinder pressure. This is made possible by the long travel of the valve. Ultimately all the brake-cylinders are exhausted slightly in unison as the train comes to a standstill and the brakes " bite " into the wheels. A retaining valve 15 may be provided to prevent the pressure from falling below a given value.
