Abstract

8865. Gallusser, H. April 17, 1912, [Convention date]. Fluid - pressure. - Air brakes for railway trains are provided, in addition to the usual pneumatic apparatus, with electro - magnetic valves controlled by the driver and adapted to connect the brake cylinder to exhaust or to the auxiliary reservoir so as to secure a braking pressure proportional to the current energizing the magnet. The electro-magnetic valve comprises a piston 12, which is connected by its rod 13 to the armature 15 of an electromagnet, and is formed with a bore 16 co-operating with a valve 20 connected to another valve 19. The bore 16 communicates with a chamber 18 open to the atmosphere at 17, and the valve device is connected by a pipe 9 to the auxiliary reservoir 4, and by a pipe 11 to the brake cylinder 6. If the brake-cylinder pressure is less than that which corresponds to the degree of energization of the magnet, the piston 12 moves upwards so as to open the valve 19 and supply the brake cylinder from the auxiliary reservoir; whereas if the brakecylinder pressure is greater than the amount for which the magnet is set, or if the energization of the magnet is decreased, the piston 12 falls so as to open the valve 20 and connect the brake cylinder to atmosphere. The auxiliary reservoir 4 is recharged by the train-pipe 1 and triple valve 3 during electric application, a double check valve 5 being provided to cut off the brake cylinder from the triple valve in electric applications, and from the pipe 11 in pneumatic applications.
