Abstract
476,504. Brakes. LEITNER, H. June 9, 1936, No. 16162. [Class 103 (i)] Braking - apparatus comprises a direct braking branch and a power braking branch operated by a common pedal or the like through a floating lever the power branch being energized by a clutch put into operation by a member connected at one end of the floating lever, the other end of which is connected to the pedal and an intermediate point to the direct braking branch, the arrangement being such that the ratio between the pressure applied to the clutch and that applied to the direct braking branch does not exceed 1:2. As compared with apparatus such as described in Specification 467,184 in which the pedal is connected at the intermediate point in the floating lever there is the advantage that the magnitude of the direct pull applied to the brakes and of.the total pull is considerably increased without corresponding increase in the pressure applied to the clutch the pull of which on the brakes may be amplified by suitable means. The floating lever 1 is connected to the pedal 3, 4 at 2 and at an intermediate point by a link 5 to an arm 6 on a rock shaft 7 having mechanical connections to the brakes or to the operating lever of a master cylinder of a hydraulic brake system. The other end of lever 1 is connected by link 9 to the operating levers 11 of a disc clutch which are adapted to slide the driven member 13 of the clutch on an extension 12 of the gear box 10 of a motor vehicle into engagement with the driving member 16 secured on the vehicle driving shaft. The clutch member 13 applies a pull to the brakes through a winding drum 17, cable 18, an amplifying lever 20 and a link 19 connected to the arm 6. In a modification, the lever 20 is in a vertical plane and the links 5, 19 are connected to the arms of a double-armed lever on the shaft 7. The lever 20 may be dispensed with, the. amplification being obtained by lengthening the lever 6. A strong spring or a hydraulic transmission device may be interposed in the connections from the pedal to the clutch. The arrangement may be such that a degree of direct braking is effected before the clutch becomes operative or the clutch may come into operation first.
