Abstract

In a process wherein silver-containing substances are admixed with gold-containing substances formed by reacting compounds yielding gold ions in the presence of an alkaline medium with compounds of multivalent metals, a compound of a metal in a lower valency being employed, the silver-containing substance may be formed by a method analogous to that of the gold-containing substance, and the formation of the gold- and silver-containing substances may take place in the presence of protective colloids, for example, albuminous bodies, vegetable mucilages or lecithin. Co-deposition of the gold- and silver-containing substances is excluded. Suitable alkaline substances are alkalies, alkali carbonates, organic bases, and the alkaline salts, oxides or hydroxides of the multivalent metal compounds used, for example, manganous, cobaltous, nickelous, ferrous and cerous compounds. In an example, gum acacia is dissolved in boiling distilled water, the solution cooled, a solution of sodium hydroxide added, and thereupon a solution of silver and manganese nitrates is slowly added with stirring. Sufficient sodium hydroxide is employed to react further with a solution of gold chloride and manganese nitrate which is then added. The colloidal solution is diluted, and dialyzed in an electrodialyzing apparatus or in a parchment tube until the neutral salts are removed. Decomposition of the gold salt may precede that of the silver salt, or separate colloidal solutions may be produced and then mixed together.ALSO:Therapeutic, disinfectant, and sterilizing substances containing gold and silver are produced by adding to highly active oligo-dynamic substances containing metallic silver, gold-containing substances formed by reacting compounds yielding gold ions in the presence of an alkali medium with compounds of multivalent metals, a compound of a metal in a lower valency being employed. Co-deposition of the gold- and silver-containing substances is excluded. The gold content may be about 10 per cent of that of the silver. The silver-containing substance may be produced by a method analogous to that of the gold-containing substance. Suitable alkaline substances are alkalies, alkali carbonates, organic bases, and the alkaline salts, oxides or hydroxides of the multivalent metallic compounds used, for example, manganous, cobaltous, nickelous, ferrous and cerous compounds. The gold-and silver-containing substances may be directly, but independently, deposited on carrier substances, e.g. surgical dressing material textile fibres, cotton, fabrics, animal charcoal silica gels and bole. The carrier substance may be pretreated with alkaline substances, or may itself constitute the alkaline substance, for example, alkaline earth carbonates, magnesium or zinc oxide &c. Precipitation of the gold on the carrier may precede or follow that of the silver. The formation of the gold- and silver-containing substances may take place independently in the presence of protective colloids, for example, albuminous bodies, vegetable mucilages, or lecithin, whereby colloidal solutions effective as activators or for the treatment of various diseases are obtained. Thus, in an example, gum acacia is dissolved in boiling distilled water, the solution cooled, a solution of sodium hydroxide added, and thereupon a solution of silver and manganese nitrates is slowly added with stirring. Sufficient sodium hydroxide is employed to react further with a solution of gold chloride and manganese nitrate which is then added. The colloidal solution is diluted, and dialyzed in an electrodialyzing apparatus or in a parchment tube until the neutral salts are removed. Decomposition of the gold salt may precede that of the silver salt, or separate solutions may be produced and then mixed together. In other examples, (1) a solution of chlorauric acid and manganese nitrate is admixed with caustic soda solution and the precipitate, 2Au.3MnO2, filtered, washed and dried. It is admixed with a finely powdered substance containing metallic silver, preferably produced by reacting a compound yielding silver ions with a multivalent metal compound in an alkaline medium, the amount of the auriferous substance being one-tenth of that of the argentiferous substance; (2) gauze is dipped into a solution of chlorauric acid and manganese nitrate, expressed, and then dipped into caustic soda solution. It is then washed and immersed in a solution of manganese and silver nitrates, expressed, immersed once again into the lye, washed and dried; (3) gauze is treated similarly as in (2), the order of treatment with the gold and silver salt solutions being however reversed.
