Abstract

476,083. Printing - machines, LATZ SERVICE, Inc., H. Dec. 11, 1936, No. 34039. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 100 (ii)] Addressing and like machines ; platen machines ; , tripping - arrangements.-In an addressing or like machine wherein type-slugs are fed in sequence from a shoot to a typecarrier which is reciprocable between a typereceiving position and a printing position, the carrier co-operates with an impression member which reciprocates in the same direction as the carrier, and the slugs are fed to the carrier in an endwise direction. A platen 22, Fig. 3, vertically adjustable in a stationary guide 19 is reciprocated by pivotal connection at 32 with a lever 30 rocked about a central pivot 31 by a rotary cam 34. To prevent jamming of the platen in its guide, the pivot 31 is carried by a frame 37 hung from a pivot 38, and to allow adjustment of the printing pressure, the pivot 38 is mounted in eccentric bearings 39 rotatable from a hand-lever 41. A type-bar carrier 46 is reciprocated in vertical guides 48 by a lever 49 rocked about a central pivot 50 by a rotary cam 56. Type-bars 59 are moved in succession on to the platen 46, which has an abutment 60 against which a type-bar is clamped by a bar 61 carried by a lever 62 pivoted at 63 and pressed towards the type-bar by a spring 65 and is released when the platen drops owing to the engagement of a wedge on the lever 62 with a vertical rod 69 arranged inside the member 46. To support the member 46 when raised for printing, an arm 70 spring-pressed towards the platen moves under the lower end thereof ; a cam-actuated rod 77 subsequently releases the arm 70. The type-bars 59 are arranged vertically in an horizontal shoot 86, Fig. 4, and are pressed up to a vertical guide 89 by a follower 110. They are transferred in succession on to the carrier 46 by a pusher 90 reciprocated by connection with an arm 99 oscillated about a pivot 100 by a rotary cam 106. Slidably mounted inside the pusher 90 are bars 92, 93, Fig. 8, formed with racks 94 engaging a pinion 95 so that the bars move in opposite directions. A spring 96 connected to the bar 92 causes the bar 93 to be normally projected to the right so that when the pusher 90 moves to the right this bar is arrested by the type a on the slug 59, subsequent movement of the pusher causing the bar 92 to be projected into engagement with the slug 59, this arrangement ensuring that whatever the length of type a, the impression is printed in a central position. The follower 110, Fig. 4, is advanced intermittently by a reciprocating rack 118 engaging a pawl 120 thereon ; by turning a handle 116, the follower may be rocked about a pivot 112 to effect release from the rack. After printing, each slug is pushed by its successor into an inclined shoot 134 from which it falls into a trough 135, and is pushed to the right by a pusher 137 reciprocated by a rotary disc 146 acting through rods. Inking-apparatus.-The slugs are inked by rollers 150, 151, Fig. 3, mounted together with a distributing-roller . 152 in a carriage 147 reciprocated in guides 149 by a gear segment 185. The rollers 150-152 are rotated by frictional engagement with rollers having pinions engaging a rack 157. The roller 152 engages a roller 159 in contact with a duct roller 161 rotated intermittently by pawl-andratchet mechanism from a reciprocating slide 167. The rollers 150-162 pass over a distributing-disc 171 also rotated intermittently by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism from the slide 167. To avoid interference with the driving of the roller 161, the roller 152 is tripped away from its driver during the period when the rollers 152, 159 are in contact. For this purpose, the roller 152 is mounted in pivoted arms 174 carrying a roller spring-pressed towards a guide 177 cut away to cause the arms to swing counterclockwise when the carriage is in its rearward position.
