Abstract

752,197. Selective embossing machines; sheet delivery apparatus. ADDRESSOGRAPHMULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1954 (Feb. 24, 1953], No. 4351/54. Classes 100 (1) and 100 (4). Embossing-machines; plate supporting carriage; plate clamping arrangements.-A selective embossing machine has a magazine M for blank plates Pb, a feed-plate 191 at the bottom of the magazine to advance plates individually to a loading position where they are gripped by a carriage 80 movable to embossing position, a shoot 53 adjacent to the magazine into which the embossed plates are ejected and a station S at the other end of the shoot where pressureapplying means evens out the embossures on the plate. The carriage 80 travels from the loading position to the embossing position and, for character spacing movement, on a track 60, and comprises a main casting 81 on which two pairs of upper rollers 85U, 86U, Fig. 14, are mounted for vertical and horizontal engagement with the top of the track 60 and one pair of rollers 85L and one pair of shoes 81S engage the lower part of the track. The carriage carries a cross-slide 95 for movement of the plates in line-spacing direction and supports a pair of jaws 130, 131 pivoted together on a shaft 155 and operated by a cam-shaft 150 rotated by a linkage 165 from a trigger 162 at the end of a barrel 160. A spring 161S tends to keep the jaws closed, while a coil spring (133, not shown) opens the jaws when the cam-shaft 150 is rotated. The jaws normally rest in horizontal position, shown in Fig. 14, to which they are adjusted by a screw 135S, but may be pushed upwards a small amount to receive a plate from the magazine M. A blank plate is picked up by movement of the cross-slide an amount less than one line-space and the carriage is moved leftwardly to the embossing position. During this movement a lever 205 is engaged and operates a one-revolution clutch driven from a continuous power source. This operates a shaft 239 and arms 193, 194 to move the blank feed-plate 191, which positions the next plate in the loading position. Through a yieldable coupling 236-238, Fig. 5, a crank arm 240 is rocked to move a carriage 260C carrying pressure roller 262 and backing roller 261 across the embossures of a previously ejected plate now in the end of the ejection shoot 53. This evens out any difference in depth of the characters, say between an " i " or an " m " which may occur due to their differing area of embossing. Sheet delivery.-When the carriage is returned to the loading position it is coincident with the ejection shoot 53 into which an embossed plate is shot by a spring 145, Fig. 14. The plate is arrested, for action by the pressure roller 262, by a gate 295, Fig. 1, which is opened after the completion of action by the roller carriage 260C. This allows the finished embossed plate to drop on to the top of a packer 355, Fig. 12, which is actuated from an arm 340 attached to the driveshaft 239. The packer 355 is a U-shaped block formed at the end of a plate 350 guided for reciprocation by guide-plates 348, 349 and urged away from the stack of plates P by springs 353. When the arm 340 moves clockwise, the springs 353 move the plate to the right and the embossed plate drops on to the tray T. Return of the arm 340 counter-clockwise engages a lug 346 of a rod 345, and a surrounding spring 345S, stronger than the springs 353, moves the packer 355 to shift the embossed plate into the stack where it is retained by pawls 336, 337. Carriage-release arrangements.-The carriage 80 may be released from its escapement mechanism by a bar 120 operated by a trigger 122 moved towards a gripper 123.
