Abstract

475,998. Metallurgical furnaces. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. Feb. 1, 1937, No. 2884. Addition to 428,967. [Class 51 (ii)] The annular rotary hearth furnace described in the parent Specification is modified with the object of reducing the formation of dust. Air is supplied to the charge from an air box 7 through tuyere nozzles 5, and arrangements are provided by which each nozzle is shut off in turn as it passes the rabbling station. As shown, a wheel 16 is mounted on the air box opposite the rabbles and carries radial rods 17 which engage in turn with the tuyÞre nozzles as the rotation of the hearth turns the wheel. Charges, agitating.-Two or more rabble bars 12, 13 are used at each station instead of a single bar, and these are connected to the operating mechanism 14 so that they do not work in phase. A clutch is provided so that at least one of the bars can be disconnected from the drive. An even flow of air over the charge beneath the hood 26 is maintained by arranging the gas outlet therefrom diametrically opposite the working opening, or midway between them when two or more working openings are provided. To increase the speed of flow of gases over the hearth the hood may be made low and in this case the charge is fed from a hopper on to the upper surface of a low annular cooling- box. An upward stream of cooling-air may be induced by convection between the outer wall 26 of the hood and a surrounding ring 37.
