Abstract
475,866. Typewriters; addressing- machines. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H. (Standard Register Co.) March 26, 1936, No. 9054. [Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iv)] In a feed-roller or platen-roller for use in typewriting, addressing, and like machines and comprising an elongated cylindrical surface arranged between and of substantially the same diameter as wheels provided with one or more pins for engaging perforations in stationery, the cylindrical surface is divided along at least part of its length into circumferentially spaced portions which mate and interlock with corresponding portions of one or both pin-wheels, the arrangement permitting the pin-wheels to be relatively adjusted along the axis in accordance with the distance between the rows of perforations in the stationery. The roller shown in the Figure comprises a head 3 and a pin-wheel 2 connected by rods 1 which pass through holes in an axially adjustable pin-wheel 5. The pin-wheel 2 is secured to a shaft 6, and the head 3 and pin-wheel 5 are revoluble on a sleeve 11, the pin-wheel 5 being engaged by a grooved collar 22 which, after axial adjustment of the pinwheel, is secured to the sleeve by a screw 23. The feed-pins 7 may be fixed to the pin-wheels, or may be arranged, during rotation of the roller, to be moved radially by means of cams 10 secured and splined to the sleeve respectively. The sleeve can be turned to vary the position at which the feed-pins are projected, and is secured by a detent 17. The head 2 may be axially-adjustable and additional pin-wheel units may be provided. The rods 1 carry discs 4 or spiders. When the roller is employed as a platen, the spacing-mechanism is so arranged that a solid part of the roller, for instance shaped parts of the rods 1, is moved into the printing line. The roller may be formed with a continuous surface, excepting the part required for adjustment of the heads. Specifications 372,980, 408,125; and 409,162, [Group XV], are referred to.
