475,776. Modulating light. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. May 27, 1937, No. 14696. Convention date, June 1, 1936. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] A condenser lens system for projecting light from a helical coil filament 2 on to a particular area, particularly for sound recording and monitoring apparatus, comprises a cylindrical lens 5 approximately midway between the spherical components 3, 4 of the condenser, the lenses being so arranged that the filament is sharply in focus on the said area in a direction at right-angles to the axis of the filament, Fig. 1, and is slightly out of focus in a direction parallel to the said axis, Fig. 2. As shown, the lens 5 is plano-cylindrical, the axis of the cylinder being at right-angles to the axis of the filament. As applied to sound-recording apparatus, the area on which the light is received is a light valve comprising a variable slit 8 between ribbons 10, 11. Part of the light beam outside the axial portion is used for monitoring the sound-recording operation by means of reflectors 12, 13.
