Abstract

475,605. Preventing unauthorized use of bicycles. SCHWINN, F. W. Nov. 9, 1936, No. 30498. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1935. [Class 79 (iii)] Means for locking the front wheel fork and steering stem of a bicycle preferably in a position with the wheel askew to the frame, comprises a transversely slidable bolt 10 within the tubular steering stem 5, adapted to be projected into engagement with an aperture 21 in the frame head 1 by rotation of a cylindrical lock 29 mounted in the fork crown 8 and acting through a lever 14. The bolt 10 is mounted in a plug 12 secured in the end of a reinforcing sleeve 9 inserted into the stem 5. The lever 14 is mounted between spacer sleeves on a crosspin 15a, its upper end 14a passing through a slot 13 in the plug into engagement with a recess in the bolt. A spring 30 tends to retract the bolt and prevents rattling. The lower end of the lever engages a crank-pin 27 on the inner end of the rotary part of the lock 22, the bolt 10 being projected or retracted by turning the key. The lock is on the rear side of the fork crown 8 and the aperture 21 is preferably concealed in the portion of the head 1 where it is joined to a frame tube. A closure plate 29 is inserted in the lower end of the stem 5.
