Abstract

475,557. Slicing-machines. LAMBERT, F. T. May 19, 1936, Nos. 14176 and 29167. [Class 28 (ii)] An attachment for a slicing-machine comprises a hinged frame including a platform along which the substance travels towards the slicing-knife, the hinge for the frame being located adjacent to the knife upon a part mounted on the existing reciprocating carriage of the machine, and an automatically displaceable support for the free end of the platform, the displacement of the support varying the inclination of the platform and thereby regulating the obliquity of the cut. In Fig. 1, a platform 24 is hinged at 27 to the reciprocating carriage 21 and is supported at its free end by a pair of struts 26 pivotally attached to the platform and to the feed table 22. The meat is supported on a slide 30 on the platform 24, and is held thereon by a bar 28, mounted on the usual clamp posts 23, and forced on to the meat by springs 29. As the feed progresses, the meat moves down the platform towards the knife, and owing to the varying inclination of the struts, the obliquity of the cut progressively lessons. The initial inclination of the platform may be adjusted by adjusting the lengths of the struts 26, the parts of the struts being clamped together in their adjusted position by a screw 34. A cross-rail 31, with or without the usual curved rind support, supports the meat near the cutting position. In Fig. 3, the attachment comprises a frame 40 having clips 41 to position it on the usual clamp posts 23, a platform 42 hinged to the frame at 43, and an auxiliary feed screw 44 journalled at its ends on the underside of the platform and operated by a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism 45, 47 which is actuated by a stationary adjustable abutment. The feed-nut 48 is secured beneath the feed plate 49 and contacts with a bar 52 guided by the screw and by bars parallel thereto. Struts 54 are pivoted to the opposite ends of the bar 52 and are pivoted at 55 to the bottom of the frame 40, the pivot 55 having a screw clamp incorporated therewith whereby the struts may be secured in any position of adjustment. In operation, the feed table 22 is advanced to its foremost position and the plate 49 is fully retracted, the platform 42 being horizontal. As the meat plate advances to the knife, the nut 48 pushes the bar 52 forwards, and the struts 54 rise to incline the table to a progressively increasing extent. When the greatest desired inclination is obtained, the pivot 55 is clamped, the plate 49 retracted, the meat is re-positioned and the slicing is continued at a constant obliquity. In a modification, the cross-bar 52 is omitted and the struts are pivoted to the sides of the nut 48. In another construction, the ordinary feed table is removed from the machine and a modified feed table is fitted to the machine, this table having a feed nut, for engaging the usual feed screw, and two racked posts on which sleeves are vertically slidable, the sleeves housing pinions engaging with the racks. The pinions are operated intermittently through ratchet-and-worm gearing to move upwardly or downwardly, as desired, the ratchet pawl being reversible and actuated during the reciprocations of the carriage by a stationary adjustable abutment plate. The pinions are on a common shaft having a sleeve on which the free end of the pivoted platform rests, the inclination of the platform being thus affected by the forward and up or down motions of the sleeve. A rod on the pinion shaft connects it with a meat plate slidable on the platform, the plate thus receiving its feed movements. In all the modifications, a cross-rail 93, Fig. 10, may be provided to support the meat adjacent to the knife, the rail having projections 97 which engage small posts 96 so that the edge of the rail moves in a vertical straight line as the platform 90 swings on its pivot 92. A spring 95 keeps the projections 97 against the posts. Specifications 381,462 and 420,382 are referred to.
