Abstract

475,510. Sirens. BLANKMEISTER, O. May 20, 1936, No. 14293. [Class 13] The operating mechanism for a fan-operated siren is actuated by a pull on a chain or the like and incorporates a free-wheel device so that continual unidirectional rotation of the fan is produced by successive pulls on the chain. A gear-wheel 11 secured to a drum on which the chain 9 is wrapped, meshes with a pinion 12 which is free on a spindle 5 and carries an arm 13 provided with a slot engaged by a pin 14 on a pawl 16 pivoted on a disc 15. The lower end of the pawl frictionally engages a disc 17 rigid with the spindle 5 which carries the fan 2 provided with blades 3 which force air through adjustable peripheral openings 4 in the casing 1. On release of the chain, the drum rotates in the reverse direction under the action of the spring 8, whilst the pawl 16 is held clear of the disc 17, thus permitting free rotation of the fan 2. The device may be supported by a bracket or by a strap passing around the neck of the operator.
