Abstract

474,657. Cleaning and grading grain &c. BOOTH, V., BOOTH, W., BOOTH, E., and BOOTH, J. Feb. 10, 1937, No. 4033. [Class 58] [Also in Group II] Grain falls from a large hopper 90 into a small hopper 91 provided with an adjustable feeding slide through which the material passes over a magnetic separator 107 to a coarse sieve 108 to take off straws, stones and coarse material, and a finer sieve 109 through which dust &c. passes : the sieves are carried in a box 94 mounted on springs 95 and reciprocated by an eccentric 96. The main body of grain passes from the sieve 109 through a shoot 111, hopper 36 and shoot 35.into the main treating chamber 33 constituted by a U-shaped outer casing 8 and a cylindrical perforated screen 28 within which a shaft 7, carrying beaters 30 and a cutting disc 22 co-operating with a fixed cutting disc 20, rotates. The shaft 7 is axially movable to adjust the distance between the discs by a thrust bearing 138 controlled by a screw 24: should the cutting operation not be desired the discs may be widely separated or removed. The screen 28 is detachable and may be replaced by other screens according to the purpose for which the machine is being used : for ordinary cutting and grading a screen with circular perforations is used ; for separating whole and broken wheat the perforations are of slot form ; for clipping oats, cutting bars are fixed along the screen while for polishing peas a slotted screen is provided fitted with a felt pad that may be supplied with wax : in the three last mentioned cases the cutting discs are put out of action. The material passing from the cutting discs is engaged by the beaters 30 and thrown against the screen 28 through which the lighter material passes into the space 61, then falling into the path of a screw conveyer 57 that carries it to an auxiliary separating device consisting of beaters 70 rotating in a screen casing 69. The fine material passing through this screen falls down a shoot 82 and is collected in a bag 120 ; smaller grade cut grain remains in the auxiliary separating device until the pressure therein becomes great enough to force open a weighted door 84, the grain then falling down a shoot 89 to a bag 122. Large cut grain remaining in the chamber 33 is polished by the beaters and accumulates until the pressure in the chamber is high enough to lift the weighted door 39 when the grain falls into a chamber 42 subjected to aspiration from a fan chamber 44 ; the cleaned cut grain falls down a shoot 48 to bags 123,124 while the lighter material and meal are carried into an expansion chamber 73 where the husks and seconds fall to the bottom and finally pass through a door 74 to a shoot 76 and bag 129. The expansion chamber is provided with extra air inlets 75 and the air passing therethrough carries the fine meal and powder to the fan chamber 44 and thence to the stive room 126 and bagging hopper 128. A second aspirating fan is connected by a conduit 71 with the shoot 89 to take off any fine meal or powder passing with the grain down this shoot ; another conduit 50, controlled by a damper 140, extends from the conduit 71 to a hopper 77 arranged to deliver through the front of the chamber 33. This hopper is used when the machine is employed for cleaning and polishing peas &c., the peas passing along the top feeding sieve 108 to a shoot 79 feeding the hopper 77 through a valve 140.
