Abstract

Apparatus for treatment of the scalp comprises a helmet or cap to fit on the head forming a gas-tight seal therewith, and means for producing automatically within the helmet alternating cycles of positive and negative pressure at timed intervals a plurality of times, for example three, a minute, the low pressure periods exceeding in duration the high pressure periods, and the automatic control being such that the maximum reduction of pressure below atmospheric does not exceed 100 mm. of mercury, and the maximum increase of pressure above atmospheric does not exceed 40 mm. of mercury. The maximum reduction of pressure below atmospheric is greater than 40 mm., and the maximum increase above atmospheric is greater than 5 mm. The duration of the negative pressure periods is preferably twice that of the positive pressure periods. Individual helmets may be used for the heads of various patients, or a standard helmet having an inflatable pneumatic edge portion may be employed. The helmet is connected to a pressure inducing device which comprises a motor which is controlled to predetermined intervals, or in which the pressure is built up to a predetermined value, when by a valvular control, negative pressure is automatically induced until the predetermined value is reached, whereupon the cycle is automatically reversed. Apparatus may also be used having an automatic control operative at predetermined intervals so that there may be an interval of normal pressure between the negative and positive pressure periods. Specification 454,912 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also undescribed drawings of what appear to be a helmet and a device for producing the pressure cycles. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
