Abstract

474,405. Calculating - apparatus. FARRER, J. O. (Aktiebolaget Original- Odhner) May 1, 1936, No. 12457. [Class 106 (i)] In a calculating -machine adapted for a system not having uniform decimal denominations and of the kind comprising a series of identical denominational amount - receiving wheels each associated with a toothed actuator, each receiving wheel meshes with an auxiliary wheel having a number of teeth equal to or a multiple of the number of digits in the denomination and provided with a transfer tooth or teeth adapted when transfer occurs to cause the actuator of next higher denomination to move through an additional step. Adding and subtracting apparatus.-The machine is designed for adding and subtracting amounts in English currency and has a single bank of setting keys 1, a series of denominational actuating racks 4 and denominational columns of stops 3 depressible by the keys and adapted for abutment by lugs 27 on slides 20 mounted on the actuators. The stops are carried by a carriage 2 movable from right to left of the machine to enable the digits of the amount to be set up on the appropriate columns starting with that of highest denomination. At the left-hand end of its excursion, the carriage positions the columns of stops in correct position relatively to the lugs 27. Now, upon the operation of the machine, a bail 28 is swung counterclockwise to free cranks 21, pin-and-slot connected to the slides 20, to the action of springs 29. The slides and actuators are then shifted to the right through distances determined by the abutment of the lugs 27 with the depressed stops 3. The setting of each actuator is transmitted to its associated totalizer wheel 9 through one of a pair of wide pinions 14, 15 constantly in mesh with the wheel and freely mounted on opposite ends of arms 11 rockable about the totalizer shaft 8. According as to whether the machine is conditioned for adding or subtracting, the arms 11 are rocked clockwise or counterclockwise to engage the upper or lower pinion with a rack 16 on the top of the actuator or a rack 17 underneath the actuator to select the direction of rotation of the wheel. A printing bar 23 is connected to each actuator through the associated crank 21. Transfer mechanism.-The totalizer wheels 9 for the various denominations are all of the same diameter and each have thirty teeth. To effect transfer from the farthings wheel to the pence wheel, the former meshes with a pinion 34, Fig. 6, which has twelve teeth and is rigid with a disc 35 having three transfer teeth 36. At transfer, a lever 37 is rocked by one of the transfer teeth, thus raising a transfer pawl 32 for the pence denomination about its pivot 33 on the pence actuator to permit the latter to move to the right, Fig. 1, relative to its slide 20 and thereby increase its length by one unit. Displaced actuators are restored at the end of each operation by a bail rocked from position 52a to position 52. The transfer mechanism between the pence and units of shillings wheels is similar to that described above with the single exception that the disc 35 is provided with only one transfer tooth. Transfer from the units of shillings wheel to the tens of shillings wheel and for all the higher denominations is effected by transfer teeth on discs secured directly to the totalizer wheels. Printing totals.-In order to enable the actuators to be set under the control of the transfer teeth in total taking operations, a flattened shaft 47 is rocked to lock the levers 37 which thus act as stops.
