Abstract

474,371. Cleaning gear wheel teeth &c. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and COLLINGS, F. S. April 25, 1936, No. 11827. [Class 60] A machine for brushing gear-wheels and like articles to remove frazing, swarf, &c. comprises a casing A, having a forward extension B provided with covers b and provided with guides c on which is slidable a slide C carrying a chuck D for holding the wheel H to be treated. The chuck comprises a block d connected to a vertical sleeve d rotated slowly through gearing d<1> by an electric motor d2 on the slide C, the wheel being held down by the head d' of a rod d<3> screwed into an arbor d' connected to a piston d<5> movable by compressed air in a cylinder d<6>. The slide Cis connected by a rod c<2> to a piston c<3> movable in a cylinder c<4> by compressed air, so that the chuck D may be moved forwardly into the extension B for removal &c. of a wheel H, or rearwardly into operative position where the wheel is acted upon by two wire brushes E, E<1>, one on each side. The brushes are carried by inclined spindles e driven by electric motors e<2> on slides e<3>, each slide being adjustable by a screw on a slide e<4>, which is adjustable transversely by a screw and hand wheel e<8>; a brush E<2> on a vertical shaft e<9> also may be provided, the shaft being adjustable vertically by gearing e<15> and horizontally by a slide e<11>. A valve F is provided, having an operating lever f whereby the movements of the slide C are controlled, and the lever f has thereon a cam f<1> which operates the push-button h of a switch, so that, when the lever f is lowered to cause the slide C to move forwardly, the switch opens and all the motors are stopped ; when the lever is raised and the slide C moves to operative position, the switch is closed. A similar valve is provided for controlling the movements of the piston d<6>. In the case of gear wheels provided with an integral shaft, the chuck D is arranged to grip the shaft. When treating racks, these are moved in a straight line past the brushes ; the machine may be provided with one brush only.
