Abstract

474,315. Automatic control systems. ANDREWS, E. J. Sept. 8, 1936, No. 24452. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVI] Speed governors for motor vehicles comprise a centrifugal governor 3 inserted in a speedometer drive and driven through a clutch that is operated by the driver. The governor actuates a bell crank one arm 7 carrying a rod 9 having a roller 10 engaging a flexible cable 11 connecting the pedal 13 to the throttle valve 16 which is biassed in the opening direction of a spring 18. When the speed rises above a predetermined limit the rod 9 raises the cable to close the valve. Alternatively, the cable may be replaced by a pair of pivoted links. Fig. 3 shows the governor connected to a bell crank 45 to which the valve 16 is also connected. The valve is biassed in its opening direction by a spring 44. The pedal 13 is connected to a lever 47 carrying an abutment 48 engaging an abutment 49 on the bell crank 45. The arrangement permits the bell crank to follow the lever 47 in the opening direction but the governor may close the valve 16 independently of the pedal 13. The centrifugal governor may be replaced by a device comprising an electrical generator connected to a solenoid, arranged; to attract an armature and operate the throttle valve or the generator could actuate a switch connecting the car batteries to a solenoid.
