Abstract

439,681. Centrifugal switches. BURGESS, G. C., Ivydene, Preston Road, Wembley, Middlesex, and DORER, P. O., 219, Dollis Hill Lane, Cricklewood, London. June 6, 1934, No. 16855. [Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XXVI] A centrifugal governor, operating a switch controlling a solenoid which closes or partly closes a valve in the induction pipe of a vehicle engine, is connected to a movable contact of the switch through tumbler mechanism so as to provide a quick make-and-break of the solenoid circuit and also to prevent rapid opening and closing of the valve when the vehicle is travelling at or nearly at the speed at which the device is intended to act. In the construction shown a governor unit 23 is mounted in a casing 20 adapted to be attached to the gear-box (not shown) and inserted in the speedometer drive, the governor shaft 24 having one end 25 which fits the existing speedometer driving coupling in the gear-box, and the other end of the governor shaft having a coupling 27 to receive the end of the flexible shaft connected to the speedometer. The governor rocks a lever 33 which is pivoted at 44 and has a forked end engaging a pin 34 in a pair of spaced arms 35 pivoted at 53 to the casing. A switch arm 36, also pivoted at 53, carries a contact 37 adapted to bridge fixed contacts 38, and a tension spring 39 extends between the end of the arm 36 and the pin 34 on the arms 35. Thus, as the vehicle speed rises the governor sleeve 29 moves to the right, lever 33 rocks in the counter-clockwise direction and moves pin 34 to the right until it passes over the dead centre position when the spring 39 snaps the arm 36 over and closes the switch.
