Abstract

474,017. Centrifugal separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. May 31, 1937, Nos. 15066 and 15067. Convention dates, June 10, 1936 and Aug. 27, 1936. [Class 23] The flow of liquid through one or more of the supply or discharge pipes of a centrifugal separator is kept constant by a regulating valve in the pipe, the operation of the valve being dependent on the drop of pressure between two points in the pipe. The pipe 1, Fig. 1, may be the cream pipe of a separator and has a throttle 2 through which the fluid passes from right to left. The spaces 3, 4 on each side of the throttle are connected by pipes 5, 8 to a cylinder 6 containing a piston 7 which supports a valve body 10 by which the pipe 1 can be partly shut off. The weight of the piston and valve is counterbalanced by the difference of pressure in the spaces 3, 4, so that when the pressure varies the valve 10 is moved to keep the difference of pressure constant and the flow in the pipe 1 therefore remains uniform. Loose weights 13 may be carried on a holder 12 supported from the piston 7 for purposes of adjustment. In a modification, the throttle 2 and pipes 5, 8 are connected to one of the discharge pipes from a centrifuge and the valve body 10 is situated in the other. A construction of regulator suitable for insertion in a pipe from a centrifuge which discharges two liquids by paring members is shown in Fig. 3. A piston 16 works in the chamber 15 and is controlled by a spring 18 arranged between its spindle 17 and the adjustable screw 19. The valve body 21 on the piston is shaped so that the available cross-section of the opening 22 is reduced as the spring is compressed. The chamber 23 is connected to the chamber 15 by a channel 24 containing an adjustable throttle 25. The liquid flows from the chamber 23 through the channel 24 to the chambers 15 and 26. Owing to difference of pressure between the chambers 23, 15 the piston is moved to compress the spring and the diminution of the space 22 by the valve body 21 causes the pressure in chamber 15 to rise to keep a constant difference dependent on the strength of the spring. A loaded lever may be. used as a substitute for the spring.
