Abstract

473,420. Directive wireless signalling. HEGENBERGER, A. F. Jan. 11, 1936, No. 995. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1935. [Class 40 (v)] For guiding an aeroplane to ground, two mobile and non-directional radio stations A, B, Figs. 2 and 3, on the aerodrome 14 transmit on different wave-lengths. The signals are received directionally on the aeroplane, and allow the pilot to bring his machine first into alignment with A, B, and then to glide down the hypotenuse HL of a right angled triangle, the base AL and elevation AH of which can be varied according to circumstances. In approaching the landing point, bearings are taken successively on the two transmitters A, B, the machine being manoeuvred as shown for instance in Fig. 5. The point at which it passes over the transmitter B is indicated either by one or more vertical " marker " beacons, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 8 shows the line of approach F1 between the transmitter B and the transmitter A in the presence of a cross-wind, the inclination being determined by the reading of the gyro compass and other instruments shown in the circles. Fig. 2 shows the initial approach from a long-range transmitter C towards the aerodrome 14, and the subsequent path taken by the aeroplane in order to align itself with the transmitters A, B before making the descent to ground. Specification 452,651 is referred to.
