Abstract

473,128. Optical sound - recording apparatus; audible - signalling apparatus. WALTON, G. W. March 4, 1936, No. 6532. [Classes 40 (ii) and 118 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL] A device for analyzing electric oscillations or sound waves comprises a plurality of magnetic circuits in parallel, separate armatures associated with the individual circuits being mounted for free vibration about a common axis in such a way that their mounting depends entirely on the presence of the flux, and the reluctance of the individual circuits being different so that the armatures have different natural periods of vibration and may respond to the component frequencies of the oscillations being analyzed. In one embodiment, sound waves are introduced by a horn 10 into the upper portion of a cylindrical magnet 1 divided by a partition 8 ending in a knife edge 3 on which a plurality of identical armatures 4 are pivotally held by the magnet. The pole faces 2 of the magnet diverge slightly so that the air gaps 6 vary along the length of the magnet whereby the armatures have different periods of vibration and resonate with the individual frequencies of the sound wave. The various frequency components of the sound waves are recorded on a continuously moving photographic film 15 by a light source 11, which projects the image of a stop 18 in a slot 17 through a lens 12 on to a slot 14 the light being reflected in its path by the faces 7 of the individual armatures. Normally, no light passes through the slot 14, but when an armature 4 vibrates the corresponding portion of the image moves from coincidence with the slot, and the oscillation is recorded on the film by a line parallel to the movement thereof the density of which is proportional to the amplitude of the oscillation, in a manner similar to that described in Specification 412,206. The armatures 4 may vary in mass progressively and so be arranged to oscillate with equal amplitudes when the analyzed frequency components have equal energy. Electric oscillations to be analyzed are applied to a coil 21, Fig. 3, on a branch of the magnet 1.
