Abstract

472,608. Roughening and sanding bricks &c. HOWARD, E. J., and DENNIS, C. March 25, 1936, No. 8920. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group X] Bricks, clay columns, tiles, &c. are moved continuously past roughening or patterning devices which comprise one or more arms carrying combs, spikes, or other devices and adapted to be vibrated simultaneously in two planes at right-angles to the direction of travel of the material. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a comb 12 is removably mounted on a rigid arm 23 which may be of channel section. The arm 23 is pivoted on an eccentric 31 and is vibrated by tappets 28, 30 to perform two oscillations at right-angles. A spring 24 and an adjustable stop 26 are provided to control the downward movement of arm 23. In a modification, Fig. 3, two combs are provided mounted on spring arms 32. The movement of the arms is limited by adjustable stops 34 and they are oscillated in the manner previously described by tappets 37, 39. The combs 12 may operate on one, two, or three sides of the bricks &c., and the number of sets may be varied. After passing the combs the bricks &c. pass under nozzles 13, Fig. 1, which spray them with water or other fluid. They then pass beneath a sanding device 14 which comprises a hollow spindle 15 adapted to be rotated and to scatter sand centrifugally through a peripheral aperture 21. Excess sand is caught in the trough 22.
