Abstract
471,056. Lifting-cradles &c. WALKER, J. H. Feb. 20, 1936, No. 5145. [Class 78 (iv)] Apparatus for lifting stacks of articles com prises a pair of member 4 inclined upwardly fron their inner ends which are pivoted either, as shown, to a part 5 bear ing on the stack, or to each other, and them selves bear on the stack suspensions means 3 ex tending downwardly from the outer ends of the members 4 to a base 1, and means 9 connecting the outer ends of the members 4 with the lifting means 11 so that when the stack is lifted the inward pull of the connecting means 9 causes a downward thrust to be exerted on the stack which is thus securely clamped on the base. The pivots of the members 4 may be insertable in alternative holes in the part 5 to provide for adjustment. Locking devices may be provided for maintaining the parts in stack clamping position when the tension of the lifting means is released. The base 1 may be constructed as described in Specification 445,204, and the part 5 may form the central member of a top frame as described in that Specification. The base flanges 7 of the part 5 may be faced with resilient or frictional material. When the members 4 themselves bear on the stack, they may be extended in width to cover the whole of the top of the stack, and be provided with down-turned flanges to hold the top layer. Means may be provided between the suspension ring 10 and the hinge of the members to maintain them slightly flexed when the stack is not being lifted. The Provisional Specification describes also arrangements in which pressure exerting levers, connected to the crane hook, are pivoted to a top frame from which the base is suspended, and also in which a quadrilateral linkage working in guide slots in a top frame is adapted to thrust downwardly under the lifting force. The use of springs, and hydraulic or pneumatic devices for exerting the downward pressure is also referred to in the Provisional Specification.
