Abstract

470,708. Sewing - machines. PRIME MACHINE CO., Inc. Feb. 19, 1936, No. 5025. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1935. [Class 112] In a sewing-machine in which a reciprocating needle forms a loop which is engaged by a loop-taker in normal operation, means are provided for slipping one or more stitches in a line of stitches by positively gripping and manipulating the needle thread to prevent engagement of the loop taker without interrupting the normal operation of the looptaker or needle. The gripping means may comprise a pair of resilient jaws 10, 11 adapted to be rocked on the shaft 12 in timed relation with the needle bar by a cam 16 and lever 14, the gripper rising with the needle and with-- drawing the portion of the thread which normally forms the loop. At the top of its movement, the arms 10, 11 are separated by a wedge 19 to release the thread. In normal operation, the gripper is held out of contact with the cam by a slide 20 adapted to be moved over an arm 21 projecting from the lever 14, and to depress it by means of a wedge surface 23 thereon. When a stitch is to be slipped, the slide 20 is withdrawn, and during this operation, the gripper must be in its highest position to allow a lug 22 on the slide to clear the arm 21.
