A furnace for incinerating sewage screenings in conjunction with the incineration of sewage sludge comprises a furnace structure 11 wth superposed hearths 12 ... 15 and a vertical rotary rabble shaft 17 with stirring arms 18, 19, 20 for rabbling the sludge successively over the various hearths in the presence of an ascending stream of gases; an opening 21 for introducing sewage sludge on to the upper hearth 12 and a grate 27, preferably conical, provided with perforations and secured to the rotary shaft 17 for the incineration of sewage screenings introduced thereto from a hopper 25. An opening 31 is provided in the furnace wall to permit stoking of the screenings on the grate. Specification 463,037 is referred to.
