Abstract

The solidification point of bituminous hydrocarbon oils containing paraffin wax is lowered without separating the paraffin wax by adding one or more pour-point depressants and one or more diluents. The diluents consist of hydrocarbon oils less viscous than that treated, and are added in such quantity that the general character of the oils treated is not altered, in no case exceeding 25 per cent. Depressants specified are the neutral condensation product of naphthalene and chlorparaffin, natural and artificial asphalts, pitch, and products obtained from asphalts or pitch by distillation or fractional solution. The additions may be made at ordinary temperature and in any order; the depressant may be added in solution in the diluent; the resulting mixture may be warmed; and excess of diluent may be added and most of it distilled off. There may also be added as stabilizers organic bases such as triethanolamine and pyridine. In examples: (1) lubricating oil is mixed with kerosene and the neutral condensation product of naphthalene and chlorparaffin; (2) and (3) lignite tar or a distillation product thereof is mixed with solar oil and Roumanian asphalt or cracking process pitch, then heated to 100 DEG C. for two hours; (4) as in example (3) but excess benzine is added and most of it distilled off; (5) to a mixture of kerosene and paraffin wax is added cracking process pitch and benzene, most of the latter being then distilled off, triethanolamine being also added. Specifications 369,197 and 413,637 are referred to.
