Abstract

Iron ores are enriched by sintering on a downdraught sintering machine, the resulting nodules being reduced in size, as by tumbling or crushing, and the fines, which contain the major amount of impurities, being subjected to magnetic separation. The coarser ore is preferably fed without sintering to the blast furnace, together with the coarser particles resulting from the sintering and the heads from the magnetic separation. The middlings from the magnetic separation, and in some cases a part of the heads, may be returned with fresh ore to the sintering machine. In order to eliminate as far as possible the amount of non-magnetic iron oxide in the sintered product the sintering is done in a reducing atmosphere and the temperature is kept down to about, or preferably below, 1050 DEG C. The reducing atmosphere may be obtained by limiting the air supply, so that the oxygen is burned to carbon monoxide in the surface layer of the charge, which may contain a heavier percentage of fuel or consist of fuel only; alternatively blast-furnace or coke-oven gas burned with a limited air supply may be used. The reducing gas is preferably pre-heated.
