Abstract

469,178. Glass manufacture. TRIGGS, W. W. (Libbey Glass Manufacturing Co.) Jan. 14, 1936, No. 1168. [Class 56] A machine for making glassware comprises a number of devices for carrying glass blanks or parisons from one to another of a number of stations at which the blanks are shaped, the devices being oscillated about a common axis independently of one another in order to pass from station to station. The machine shown in Fig. 1a is of the type described in Specifications 26222/11 and 142,765, [both in Class 56], and is intended particularly for making tumblers although it can be used for making bottles, lamp bulbs, and other hollow ware. The machine comprises a gathering-ram C which gathers charges of molten glass by suction from a suitable furnace A and then drops the shaped charges or parisons 1, Fig. 16, into jaws 6 on the ends of blowing-spindles F, as described in Specification 26222/11. Two sets of spindles are used and they are supported by heads D, D<1> which swing independently of one another, about the central axis of the machine, through an angle of 180‹ between the gathering-station and a moulding-station. The two heads move independently but in proper timed relation with one another. Each head may be provided with a pair of spindles, and it also supports mechanism for rotating, oscillating, and inverting the spindles. At the gathering-station, there is situated a pneumatic cylinder H for operating the spindle jaws 6, Fig. 16, and the plunger 7 which forms the initial cavity in the blank 1. The spindles carry the blanks to a blowing and moulding mechanism K which is mounted on the stationary framework of the machine diametrically opposite to the cylinder H. An " optic '' mechanism 386 may be situated at the moulding-station, or at a suitable point between the gathering and moulding stations. The base B which supports the mechanism is mounted on wheels 29 having eccentric journals that enable the machine to be adjusted vertically to suit the level of the glass in the furnace A. The heads D, D<1> are oscillated through an angle of 180‹ by a cam, so that the blowing spindles swing between the gathering and moulding stations. In operation, when a blank has been dropped from the ram on to a spindle, as shown in Fig. 16, it is gripped by the jaws 6 and the plunger 7 then advances and forms a depression in the blank. When the plunger is withdrawn, a puff of air is admitted to the depression and expands the blank, as shown in Fig. 19 The spindle is then inverted so that the blank hangs downwards and elongates. The " optic " device 386, Fig. 21, if used is then raised momentarily into contact with the blank. This device consists of a mould with inwardly projecting ribs which chill the blank along upright lines. When the blank is fully expanded in the finishing mould 360, the chilled portions remain of greater thickness. The mould 386 has an adjustable wooden bottom 389 usually covered with a paper top which is moistened to prevent the blank from being marred. After the mould 386 has been removed, the finishing mould 360 is raised from a tank 369 containing water and is closed about the blank. Blowing is completed while the spindle is continually rotated. Finally, the mould opens and the spindle jaws 6 open and discharge the finished article. If tumblers are being made, the upper part 12 of the finished article, Fig. 23, is cut away along the line a ... b to form a tumbler 11.
