[Class 89 (i)] A device for locking a single nut or bolt comprises a length of metal strip or wire provided with a portion to engage a fixed abutment, the end portions of the strip or wire being bent towards one another normally to the length thereof, so as to provide a plurality of flat portions to spring into engagement with flats on the nut or bolt, the abutment serving to hold the device against rotation and the device being additionally shaped to spring into releasable engagement with a surface for holding the device against movement axially of the nut or bolt. The device, Fig. 2, may comprise a strip 4 having a loop 5, a tongue on which enters a recess in the member 3 ; the extreme ends 8 of the device are bent outwardly to facilitate removal, and dimples 9 on the device engage recesses 10 in the nut. In various modifications, the device is shaped to embrace all the flats of the nut ; instead of dimples, the extreme ends of the device are bent inwardly to enter recesses in the nut or one or both ends is or are slit to provide an inwardly bent recess engaging portion and outwardly bent finger pieces ; the loop 5 is dispensed with ; the device is formed of wire, Fig. 15, one convolution 18 engaging a peripheral groove 16 in the nut and a second convolution 17 engaging the flats, the end 19 engaging an aperture 7 and the convolutions being joined by a cranked part 21 ; the device of Fig. 15 is helically wound ; the device of Fig. 15 is provided with a finger piece ; a single convolution of wire engages a substantially hexagonal groove in the nut; the extreme end of the wire is bent over to engage a recess in the nut instead of or in addition to engagement with a groove in the nut ; instead of engagement of a finger on the device with a recess in the member 3, the device is formed, Fig. 31, with a single or double loop engaging a headed pin 24, the ends of the device being plain as shown or formed to engage recesses in the nut.
