Abstract

Yarn for the manufacture of driving and conveyer belts is rubberized by passage through a sequence of baths of compounded rubber latex, the twist being taken out of the yarn temporarily whilst so passing, and the yarn being subjected to mechanical treatment during or subsequent to each treatment with latex, as by passage over guide bars or rollers, or between squeeze rollers. The yarn may be of cotton, ramie, wool, hair, silk, &c. The baths are preferably of increasing concentration, and between each bath the yarn may be partly dried; before entering the first latex bath, the yarn may be treated with a wetting agent, and then partly dried. Prior to coagulation as by acetic acid, the latex-impregnated yarn is preferably rendered uniform and smoothed by passage through a die; and finally the yarn is washed, dried, and passed through a mass of zinc stearate or treated with an alcoholic solution of stearic acid. During the treatments, by the use of grooved rollers distortion of the yarn is prevented. After weaving the yarn into a belt, the latter is coated or impregnated with rubber or rubber latex by passage through baths, or by treatment in a closed vessel, impregnation being assisted by the application of a vacuum with or without subsequent application of pressure; and finally the belt is vulcanized.
