468,049. Controlling change - speed gearing. TAGLIASACCHI, A. Sept. 20, 1935, No. 26090. Void. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] The ball gear shift lever 49, Fig. 5, of a motor vehicle is operated by a governor 1, Fig. 1, driven through a sprocket 8 from the road wheels. The shaft 3 of this governor drives a compressor of air which operates in a main shift servomotor 15 and in a cross shift servomotor 16, Fig. 2. A crank 13, Fig. 1, on the governor shaft 3 constantly works the piston, not shown, of the compressor which normally reciprocates idly. For compressed air to act, a lever 6, actuated by the governor, through trip mechanism 35, 30 causes a double valve 28 to move one way or the other so that air pressure builds up on one side or the other of a piston 17 so as to displace that piston and with it a bar 39 joined to the ball lever 49, Fig. 5. As the bar 39 makes its gear-changing stroke, a rack 19 which it carries turns a pinion 20 which through a crank 21 opens the engine clutch, not shown, and closes the throttle, during change. The ends of the cross-shift cylinder 16, Fig. 2, are connected to the ends of the main shift cylinder 15, Fig. 1, by ducts 58 which are normally closed by valves 59, but are opened between speeds II and III only by a cam 60 on the governor lever 6. The governor 1 is steadied by an oil dashpot 9.
