[Class 87 (ii)] Plastic material is moulded into pieces of equal size and packed by a machine comprising a device for feeding the mass into a mould and mechanism, controlled by the mass fed into the mould, for displacing the mould, stopping the feeding device, discharging the moulded piece and packing it, the restarting of the feeding device being effected at the end of the packing operation. One method of performing the moulding operation is shown in Fig. 1, in which the plastic mass is forced into the mould 13 by a worm 8 which is driven by a shaft 9 from a box 10 containing cams and clutches to connect it to a motor 11. The mass forces back the piston 15 until the piston rod 16 contacts with the screw 17 and rocks the lever 18 thus starting the toothed wheel 22 which withdraws the mould 13 to the ejecting position 23. A projection 24 meets a pin 25 to stop the wheel 22 and to operate a lever 27 which ejects the moulded slab by means of the plunger 15. During ejection the worm 8 stops working. The weight of material moulded can be varied by adjusting the screw 17. In Fig. 2, two moulds are located in a rotary disc 39. The filling of the mould 40 by the worms 38 raises the lever 41 which starts the toothed wheel 42. This wheel rotates the disc 39 and also an adjustable cam 44 thereon actuates a lever 45 to declutch the worms 38 from the driving shaft 36. Another cam on the wheel 42 actuates a lever 46 which ejects the moulded slab from the mould 43 onto wrapping paper on a table 47 whence it is pushed to the position 51. A pusher 52 then pushes the article into a wrapping mechanism 53 of known type. A further movement of the pusher 52 ejects the wrapped piece and at the same time the lever 45 returns to its initial position and the moulding operations recommence. As shown in Fig. 3, the piston rod 56 and the adjusting screw 57 are tapered so that when the mould begins to move the rod 56 escapes from the screw and contacts with the surface 59 which determines the exact filling of the mould. A device for printing a design &c. on the moulded piece may also be provided and a wire cutter for separating the piece from the ejecting piston.
