Abstract

467,308. Welding ; soldering ; making cased articles. DENNEEN, F. S., and DUNN, W. C. Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25506. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Metal surfaces are joined by fusion produced by radiation or electrically induced currents, the welding taking place in an inert or reducing atmosphere, one or more current conductors being opposed to or applied to the work and being arranged substantially parallel thereto or conforming to the shape of the work. Pressure may be applied to the surfaces during the heating operation and after fusion the surfaces may be quenched by cooling fluid. High frequency currents may be employed for electrically inducing currents in the work. As shown in Fig. 1, a plate 1 is joined to a body 2 with the aid of a heating element 3 to which high frequency current may be applied by conductors 4. At the termination of the heating, pressure is applied through the medium of a shaft 8, eccentric 6, sliding block 7 and yoke. Quenching fluid may be introduced to the work through apertures 5. In Fig. 12 is shown a construction which enables shells 58, 59 to be fused to a shaft 60. Heating elements 61, 62 are hinged at 63, and preferably are insulated at 63<1>. Copper gauze or the like impregnated by a plastic conducting substance such as an amalgam of tin and mercury is placed at 64 for ensuring a circuit connection close to the shells at the joint between the heaters. Plungers 65 actuated by springs compress the shells against the shaft. Valves 68, 69 introduce gas for maintaining required atmosphere. When rapid cooling is desired for hardening the shells after fusion the valves stop the influx of the gas and admit water or other cooling medium. Specifications 234,373, [Class 83 (iv)], and 385,285 are referred to.
