Abstract

467,097. Feeding sheets. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. Dec. 7, 1935, No. 33982. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1934. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] The rotatable separator discs of the feeding mechanism described in Specification 375,025 are each provided with a series of circular grooves 39 on their operative faces to reduce the frictional drag between the discs and the stack of envelope blanks. A suction device 71, operated through a lever 71a initiates the feed of the bottom blank from the pile A by engaging the forward portion of the lowermost blank and separating the same from the stack. The suction is then cut off and a pair of daggers 73 move to engage the upper face of the blank and press it against the conveyer 74. Simultaneously, shovel-like members 53, 54, extending along top and bottom faces of the separator discs 10, 11 move forward, the function of the members 53, 54 being to prevent the horns 52 of the separator discs from coming into contact with the window apertures of the blanks. Rollers 75 now move forward and the lifter 62 is actuated so that a roller 69 lifts slightly the rear end of the stack A. The sucker 71 is now withdrawn and the horns 52 of the discs 10, 1.1 enter between the partly separated blank and the stack to support the stack while the conveyer carries off the separated blank. A portion of the weight of the stack is taken by a finger at the front of the pile, and the stack is maintained against movement by adjustable stops 40, 47, 49a, the stops 40 being adapted to project into the grooves 39 positioned between ridges 38 formed on the separator discs. The distance between the axes 19 of the discs 10, 11 may be varied by the manipulation of links 17, 18, pivoted at 22, and carrying sprockets and chains always in driving connection. Bolts 36 permit of maintaining the adjustable links 17, 18 in any desired position. The separated blanks arranged in a band, with sealing flaps only exposed, are passed by belts 74, 78 to a drum 80, gum being applied to the flaps by a device 81, 82. A reciprocating suction device 86 working in co-operation with oscillating daggers 89 remove the gummed blanks to the grippers 83 of a drying chain 84 moving slightly faster than the drum 80.
